The World's First Zero-Waste Winery
De Bortoli Wines, one of Australia’s largest family-owned wineries, is on a mission to become the country’s first zero-waste wine producer. What an awesome goal! With an impressive $15 million investment, they’re well on their way to achieving their dream.
Since adopting a sustainable business plan in 2004, De Bortoli has dramatically reduced its landfill waste from 300 tons a year to just 48. This transformation is part of their ambitious carbon economy project, which involves rethinking every aspect of production, from refrigeration and lighting to wine filtration and composting.
Operating across four sites in New South Wales and Victoria, De Bortoli has coordinated efforts to improve energy and water efficiency. For example, at their Bilbul winery, they installed Australia’s largest solar panel array, reducing carbon emissions by over 314 tons annually.
One of their key innovations was switching from sodium-based to potassium-based cleaning agents, allowing wastewater to be reused for irrigating crops. This change alone saves $200,000 annually in electricity costs.
Plus, their commitment to sustainability hasn’t gone unnoticed. Recognized by the NSW government’s sustainable advantage program, De Bortoli won an Australian Business Award for Sustainability in 2015. With a return on investment of about 20% over five years and a reduction of over 2,500 tons of CO2 annually, their efforts are showing that sustainability really does pay off.
De Bortoli’s journey towards zero waste is a shining example of how businesses can lead the way in environmental responsibility. Cheers to minimizing waste!

4 Ways to Mindfully Meal Plan
Meal prep is never perfect, and that’s okay! The goal is to nourish yourself with variety, minimize waste, and enjoy the process. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when mindfully meal planning for your week!
1. Let Your Schedule Lead
Consider your weekly schedule and budget before planning meals. Balance these factors: a meal that is quicker to prepare may be more expensive, versus a meal that’s least expensive but might take more time or compromise quality. What’s your schedule like and how much time can you dedicate to prep? This should give your planning a good framework.
2. Use What You’ve Got
Plan your meals around what you already have and what’s about to spoil. If you need help getting inspired, use websites like My Fridge Food to plug in what you have at home and get recipe ideas using only what you have!
3. Smart Shopping
Make your shopping list with your recipes in mind. Use store apps to check for sales and build your list, reducing waste and saving money. Buying in bulk, especially for items like oats and rice, can be more economical and eco-friendly.
4. Batch Cook and Plan for Leftovers
Batch cooking doesn’t mean prepping a week’s worth of meals in one go. Doubling recipes for leftovers is just as effective. Knowing the shelf life of different foods helps—meat dishes last a few days, while veggie dishes last longer.
Mindful meal planning celebrates using what you have while keeping your budget and time in mind. It’s about joy in cooking and tasting, as much as it is about reducing waste and environmental impact. Happy planning!

Water Saving Tips: Day 5
It’s the final day of Water Saving Week and we hope you learned a few new tricks for saving water at home! We’ve got one last tip to help you incorporate more water-saving habits into your daily life. Today’s tip: drink more water!
It may sound counterintuitive, but drinking more water actually saves the resource. Let’s explain: Other drinks require significantly more water to produce. For example, did you know that drinking one bottle of cola consumes around two or three bathtubs full of water? This is due to the high water usage in growing sugar cane and producing plastic bottles.
When it comes to your daily caffeine, tea is the way to go as tea leaves need much less water to grow than coffee beans. While a cup of coffee requires about 140 liters of water, a cup of tea only uses around 34 liters. That being said, sticking to plain water most of the time is the best way to avoid water waste!
And remember, when we say drink more water, we don’t mean from a plastic bottle! Making those bottles consumes a lot of water, and many end up as litter. Instead, opt for tap water. You can use a filter if needed and a stainless steel water bottle to stay hydrated on the go.
Thank you for joining us this Water Saving Week. Let’s keep these tips in mind and make every drop count!
